Yahoo Fantasy Golf begins this weekend! I'm excited - my team "ernie the pirate" will be rocking the league. That's right kids, fantasy golf. Not excited enough by watching golf? Play online with the stats! I hear its thoroughly invigorating, or incredibly boring. It was free so i kinda just signed up (I'm a sucker for stupid stuff like this)
24 blog - hella late

Just a quick update - Jack racked up another 4 kills this week bringing the totals up to:
Baddies: 47 SoD: 4 Jack: 17 (and the blown knee)

I wasn't counting Tony's kills but it was also 3 or 4 for the week. Someone let me know if they have a more accurate account.

My roommate tries to copy everythign I do and has decided to start a blog. It looks pretty good so far, and by pretty good I mean vastly inferior to this webble's storied history. He'll probably soon be a blogging genius, however.

Crazy, mebbe fake? AMC theater goers may recognize where this is from.
Apparently Smackdown! isn't going anywhere. Not sure what Moonves meant in his comments then. More to come I'm sure.

Jan 26, 2005

Smackdown smacked down!

'with the news that UPN is going for respectability in the future, and in that future there's no room for senseless degrading of the Amish or for smackdowns.

That's right. There's only one year left on the contract for World Wrestling Federation's "Smackdown!" and the network has decided to let it go.' Rest of the story here.

Interesting news indeed, hopefully this will teach Vinnie Mac a lesson about quality programming and more importantly hopefully a lot of wrestlers won't get cut loose if the show doesn't get picked up elsewhere.
This was the very next story on the local6 webpage -

Budweiser Adds Herbs, Caffeine To Beer

ST. LOUIS -- Anheuser-Busch is adding a little jolt to its new beer brand. B-to-the-E is being rolled out nationwide, after being test marketed in 55 cities.

The "E" stands for extra, in this case caffeine and herbs, including ginseng.

The world's largest brewer is going after the 20-something market with the fruity brewski.

But some beer-lovers might have a hard time downing the stuff. Anheuser-Busch even suggests that B-to-the-E be served over ice.
This is crazy -

OCALA, Fla. -- Two boys, ages 9 and 10, were charged with felonies and taken away from school in handcuffs, accused of making violent drawings of stick figures."

Well, it isn't looking good for the Steelers either - but I got a great deal on The Sandman vols 3-5! Less than half price! That should count for something, eh?
And I'm 0 for 1.... Let's go Steelers!!!
Last minute football picks: Falcons over Eagles, Steelers over Patriots - I may go 0-2 but it'll be down in a flame of moral righteousness (whatever that means)

There's a new jibjab! It's called "Second Term" Check it out. www.jibjab.com!
Didn't watch a lot of the Inaugural coverage today. Saw the speech - thought it was interesting and probably the best he's ever given. My fave part of the coverage I saw was probably Chris Matthews commenting on how attractive the Bush daughters looked - especially since one of the girls he was talking about wasn't Barbara but some cousin. (He of course got corrected by some equally dirty old man on MSNBC)

Here's some good news for fans of Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code. We already know that Ron Howard and Tom Hanks are attached to it. But who you ask has been cast as French investigator Bezu Fache? None other than Jean Reno, of Leon fame. The whole story at the Hollywood Reporter.

Website is back. Big collective sigh of relief here!
Nobody panic - but I think www.ahoy-matey.com is down. Looks like something went funky with the servers, and the techs are working to get it back asap.
Neil Gaiman just posted on his Journal that he's working on another project with Marvel! If anyone hasn't read his first work 1602 - check it out! And if you've never heard of Gaiman before, he's one of my fave writers, author of The Sandman and American Gods. Check him out!
Farewell HFS (From Mediaweek, whole story here): "Infinity Broadcasting announced today it had flipped WHFS-FM, a long-time Rock brand in Washington, D.C., to a Spanish-language format called "El Zol." At noon Wednesday, the station dropped its young-skewing Modern Rock programming for a blend of Caribbean and Central American dance music targeting adults 25-54."

I'll miss HFS, I didn't listen much, b/c we could never get a good signal on my side of DC, but I enjoyed the several HFStivals I attended - there rarely is a chance to get to see 10+ good bands for under $30. No HFStival anymore, no Live on Penn anymore... DC better get its outdoor music act together!

Apparently this is a method of "distressing" the furniture (making it look old, the mother tells me). I'd distress it by making it watch MSNBC all day.
There's an old man beating a wooden chair with a steel chain on TV right now. Apparently this is what passes for television these days. No wonder I haven't pitched a network show yet...
Dreamwave Production closes doors (linked from the press release at ComiXfan here)

"Dreamwave Productions announced today that after eight years in the comics industry, four of which they were self-published, they will be ceasing operations.

Established in 1996 by brothers Pat and Roger Lee, Dreamwave infused a stagnant comic book market with art and design that effortlessly combined the then dominant "American" art style with the newly emerging Japanese "Manga" art style. Since then, the company had grown to become one of the comic book industry's premiere publishers, producing a variety of original titles.

In 2002, Dreamwave firmly established itself in the comic industry as a force to be reckoned with when it launched an all-new Transformers comic's line. The return of the 80's icons shattered industry sales records, skyrocketing the book to the number one sales slot for an impressive six months. The Toronto-based company's other successful licenses included Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Duel Masters from Japan, as well as properties like Devil May Cry and Mega Man from video game giant Capcom Entertainment.

President of Dreamwave Productions, Pat Lee stated "there are a number of reasons for my decision to close Dreamwave", citing that "the shrinking comic book market combined with a weak U.S. dollar and unsustainable monetary commitments has finally proven to be too financially taxing."

This raises all kinds of questions, most specifically as to what will happen to the lucrative Transformer comic license... I'll post more when I hear more.

Wow... did not see this one coming -

"Fox pages Turner to pen Magneto spinoff pic - Twentieth Century Fox has set Sheldon Turner to draft "Magneto," an action-thriller based on the villainous character played in the first two "X-Men" films by Ian McKellen...The original "X-Men" film began with a prologue that showed his character as a child being led to a concentration camp by Nazis, and that is the period in which the Magneto film will take place. This setup will allow a future villain to at least flirt with the designation of protagonist. Since the character will be seen almost exclusively in his formative years, it is not clear whether McKellen will be in the film at all.

"I pitched a film that is almost 'The Pianist' meets 'X-Men,' about a guy who, after watching his family slaughtered, has an awakening of his powers and seeks revenge," Turner said.

"Storyline will heavily involve Professor X, the wheelchair-using X-Men leader played in the films by Patrick Stewart. That character was a soldier in the allied force that liberated the concentration camps. The professor meets Magneto after the war, and while they bond over the realization that they are alike in their special powers, their differences soon turn them into enemies. read the rest of the Variety story here

Finding all kinds of good stuff today:

"Today we salute you, Mr. Constant Popped Collar. You, bedecked in popped collar, teach us that we no longer have to live with a cold back of the neck. Sure, your Pink alligator polo may look feminine to some, but not to the 17 other queer frat guys wearing the same thing at the bar. Where others may see thoughtless fashion conformity, you preach a higher gospel. You preach of a world where its okay for a man to go tanning. You ask "why can't we wear make-up, and use shampoo with lavender essecence?" So crack open an ice-cold Bud Light, you fashion gladiator, because we all know, when we really need a piece of gum, you might have one...in your man purse"

From Comicon.com - Ben Affleck breaks up with Kevin Smith
It seems that the once fast friendship of director Kevin Smith and actor Ben Affleck is on the rocks. Affleck's big screen big break came in Smith's CHASING AMY, in which Affleck portrayed an up-and-coming indie cartoonist who was puzzled by his girlfriend's sexuality. According to the IMDb:

Ben Affleck has made an astonishing swipe at long-term pal, director Kevin Smith - accusing him of exploiting teenage fans of his cult films. Affleck has appeared in five of Smith's films, starting with 1995's Mallrats and most recently this year's Jersey Girl. But Smith was reportedly upset Affleck snubbed the DVD launch of Jersey Girl - and Affleck has hit back while publicizing new movie Surviving Christmas. He told The Scoop, "It wasn't enough that I went to Vegas to play in his lame charity poker tournament for the DVD launch of Jersey Girl, but I also had to go out to his f***ing store where he's opening a store where all he's doing is selling more T-shirts of him and his jacka** friend (Jason Mewes) and he's roped in an entire generation of kids into thinking it's worth spending $30 on and $50 if he signs it. I mean the whole thing is a complete travesty and he wanted me to participate in it and I won't do that."

Affleck has previously had well documented break-ups with Gwyneth Paltrow and Jennifer Lopez. He is currently planning an eventual break-up with current gal pal Jennifer Garner.

VP Debate Blog Closing

Edwards: great closing statement. Turned the argument back to a referendum on Bush.
Cheney: Decent closer. Nothing special

Winner: Cheney. Not the runaway that it looked like it was going to be about halfway through, as Edwards really made up some lost ground on domestic issues. Both men looked poised and competent, but more time was spent attacking, defending Kerry than attacking, defending Bush. Will it matter in the long run? Nope.

Record:
Bush/Cheney: 1
Kerry/Edwards: 1

VP Debate Blog: pt 2

Parental opinion on debate so far:

"Is this what it feels like to be bitch slapped?"

"This is stressing me out, I'm getting out an adult beverage."

9:51: "Mr Vice President, I don't think the country can handle 4 more years of your kind of experience."

9:53: Edwards needs to use more numbers, even if they are inaccurate - Cheney giving specific examples of how much things are going to cost is going to resonate much better. Like Kerry voted to raise taxes 98 times - we know that isn't really accurate but it sounds good.

9:55: Way to attack Edwards for attacking Kerry during the primary. Good use of taking advantage of incumbancy.

9:56: There we go, "Kerry voted 600 hundred times for tax cuts." Yes! They touched gay marriage! Have I mentioned the Fedex guy today told me he's voting Republican because of gay marriage and gay marriage alone?

9:59: Doesn't it feel like Edwards brought up Cheney's gay daughter to remind hardcore Republican voters - hey these guys are in bed with the gays too!

10:01: Ooh Cheney speechless - interesting.

10:02: Gwen is moderating far better than Jim Lehrer did last week.

10:06: The VP dodged on an opportunity to go after Edwards trial lawyer past, and Edwards turned it into a great opportunity to talk about healthcare.

10:09: Whack! Cheney hits back with specifics once more - what a knowledge/training of the record. Debates where the candidates have extensive legislative records can only be hurt by their votes.

10:15: Second (third now) time Edwards talked about killing terrorist before they attack us - does that not sit well with anyone else, killing people before they do anything to us?

10:17: "You want me to answer a question about his qualification?" Edwards doesn't really tell us why he's qualified, and Cheney basically told us that Edwards was only doing the job to pander to the south and be president eventually.

Cheney is being Bush's attack dog, while Edwards is only being Kerry's cheerleader.

10:20: Edwards missed the point of the last question, as Gwen was trying to get the VP candidates to talk about themselves outside of their running mates. Edwards merely dropped the kerry and added a "we".

10:25: Edwards hit Bush with flip-flop angle! Why haven't we heard this line of attack before? On the other hand Cheney said earlier tyhat Kerry is consistent on defense - consistently on the wrong side. Interesting tactical switch for both sides.

VP Debate Blog

Im gonna attempt to blog some of my thoughts on the VP debate:

9:28: Cheney: "If he can't stand up to the pressure that howard dean presents, how can he stand up to al qaida" Cheney is doing a marvelous job at keeping the focus on Kerry, not Bush.

"They don't have a plan, they have an echo" another great Cheney zinger. Cheney is merely repeating Bush's talking points from last week, but he is coming off as intellectual, while Edwards is repeating Kerry and sounding like a broken record.

9:32: Don't denigrate the polish pt 2: Don't denigrate Iraq either! I liek how Gwen is actually following up to get more specifics, especially on issue like "Kerry's Global test for military action.

9:35: "Immediately committed to implementing the 9/11 commission suggestions" - Cheney needs to go after Edwards for that - he's suggesting completely revamping the intelligence apparatus of America as a knee jerk reaction.

9:37: Excellent answer by Cheney on the question of sanctions. Gotta love when they drag Khadafi out.

9:39: "There are 60 countries with members of Al Qaida in them, how many are we going to invade?" Well said, lets move to domestic issues! As to Halliburton, negative points for both sides, for Cheney with the "I need more than 30 seconds" and Edwards for his smirk afterwards. I'm gonna check factcheck.com.

9:42: Personal story! Edwards is chanelling Al Gore (which isn't good btw)

9:45: Brutal attack on Edwards' Senate record! Gonna publish and do the second half in a new post.
