"How to Kill a Mockingbird" - decent piece - its a little long and drags a bit, but has a great soundtrack and teaches us all an important lesson - Ninjas and Pirates can exist in peace. Or in pieces. I forget which.
Will Eisner, one of the fathers of the comic world passed away yesterday. Here's a good biography of him for those not familiar with the man's work - Will Eisner: 1917-2005

Dreamwave Production closes doors (linked from the press release at ComiXfan here)
"Dreamwave Productions announced today that after eight years in the comics industry, four of which they were self-published, they will be ceasing operations.
Established in 1996 by brothers Pat and Roger Lee, Dreamwave infused a stagnant comic book market with art and design that effortlessly combined the then dominant "American" art style with the newly emerging Japanese "Manga" art style. Since then, the company had grown to become one of the comic book industry's premiere publishers, producing a variety of original titles.
In 2002, Dreamwave firmly established itself in the comic industry as a force to be reckoned with when it launched an all-new Transformers comic's line. The return of the 80's icons shattered industry sales records, skyrocketing the book to the number one sales slot for an impressive six months. The Toronto-based company's other successful licenses included Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Duel Masters from Japan, as well as properties like Devil May Cry and Mega Man from video game giant Capcom Entertainment.
President of Dreamwave Productions, Pat Lee stated "there are a number of reasons for my decision to close Dreamwave", citing that "the shrinking comic book market combined with a weak U.S. dollar and unsustainable monetary commitments has finally proven to be too financially taxing."
This raises all kinds of questions, most specifically as to what will happen to the lucrative Transformer comic license... I'll post more when I hear more.

One quick thing - I cant stop watching the trailer for Sin City, a neat little flick based on a cult Frank Miller hit. Here's a reason to look foward to April 1st.

Wow... did not see this one coming -
"Fox pages Turner to pen Magneto spinoff pic - Twentieth Century Fox has set Sheldon Turner to draft "Magneto," an action-thriller based on the villainous character played in the first two "X-Men" films by Ian McKellen...The original "X-Men" film began with a prologue that showed his character as a child being led to a concentration camp by Nazis, and that is the period in which the Magneto film will take place. This setup will allow a future villain to at least flirt with the designation of protagonist. Since the character will be seen almost exclusively in his formative years, it is not clear whether McKellen will be in the film at all.
"I pitched a film that is almost 'The Pianist' meets 'X-Men,' about a guy who, after watching his family slaughtered, has an awakening of his powers and seeks revenge," Turner said.
"Storyline will heavily involve Professor X, the wheelchair-using X-Men leader played in the films by Patrick Stewart. That character was a soldier in the allied force that liberated the concentration camps. The professor meets Magneto after the war, and while they bond over the realization that they are alike in their special powers, their differences soon turn them into enemies. read the rest of the Variety story here
This, in addition to the Wolvie solo and X3? Wowza kids.

Finding all kinds of good stuff today:
"Today we salute you, Mr. Constant Popped Collar. You, bedecked in popped collar, teach us that we no longer have to live with a cold back of the neck. Sure, your Pink alligator polo may look feminine to some, but not to the 17 other queer frat guys wearing the same thing at the bar. Where others may see thoughtless fashion conformity, you preach a higher gospel. You preach of a world where its okay for a man to go tanning. You ask "why can't we wear make-up, and use shampoo with lavender essecence?" So crack open an ice-cold Bud Light, you fashion gladiator, because we all know, when we really need a piece of gum, you might have one...in your man purse"

From Comicon.com - Ben Affleck breaks up with Kevin Smith
It seems that the once fast friendship of director Kevin Smith and actor Ben Affleck is on the rocks. Affleck's big screen big break came in Smith's CHASING AMY, in which Affleck portrayed an up-and-coming indie cartoonist who was puzzled by his girlfriend's sexuality. According to the IMDb:
Ben Affleck has made an astonishing swipe at long-term pal, director Kevin Smith - accusing him of exploiting teenage fans of his cult films. Affleck has appeared in five of Smith's films, starting with 1995's Mallrats and most recently this year's Jersey Girl. But Smith was reportedly upset Affleck snubbed the DVD launch of Jersey Girl - and Affleck has hit back while publicizing new movie Surviving Christmas. He told The Scoop, "It wasn't enough that I went to Vegas to play in his lame charity poker tournament for the DVD launch of Jersey Girl, but I also had to go out to his f***ing store where he's opening a store where all he's doing is selling more T-shirts of him and his jacka** friend (Jason Mewes) and he's roped in an entire generation of kids into thinking it's worth spending $30 on and $50 if he signs it. I mean the whole thing is a complete travesty and he wanted me to participate in it and I won't do that."
Affleck has previously had well documented break-ups with Gwyneth Paltrow and Jennifer Lopez. He is currently planning an eventual break-up with current gal pal Jennifer Garner.

VP Debate Blog Closing
Edwards: great closing statement. Turned the argument back to a referendum on Bush.
Cheney: Decent closer. Nothing special
Winner: Cheney. Not the runaway that it looked like it was going to be about halfway through, as Edwards really made up some lost ground on domestic issues. Both men looked poised and competent, but more time was spent attacking, defending Kerry than attacking, defending Bush. Will it matter in the long run? Nope.
Record:
Bush/Cheney: 1
Kerry/Edwards: 1

VP Debate Blog: pt 2
Parental opinion on debate so far:
"Is this what it feels like to be bitch slapped?"
"This is stressing me out, I'm getting out an adult beverage."
9:51: "Mr Vice President, I don't think the country can handle 4 more years of your kind of experience."
9:53: Edwards needs to use more numbers, even if they are inaccurate - Cheney giving specific examples of how much things are going to cost is going to resonate much better. Like Kerry voted to raise taxes 98 times - we know that isn't really accurate but it sounds good.
9:55: Way to attack Edwards for attacking Kerry during the primary. Good use of taking advantage of incumbancy.
9:56: There we go, "Kerry voted 600 hundred times for tax cuts." Yes! They touched gay marriage! Have I mentioned the Fedex guy today told me he's voting Republican because of gay marriage and gay marriage alone?
9:59: Doesn't it feel like Edwards brought up Cheney's gay daughter to remind hardcore Republican voters - hey these guys are in bed with the gays too!
10:01: Ooh Cheney speechless - interesting.
10:02: Gwen is moderating far better than Jim Lehrer did last week.
10:06: The VP dodged on an opportunity to go after Edwards trial lawyer past, and Edwards turned it into a great opportunity to talk about healthcare.
10:09: Whack! Cheney hits back with specifics once more - what a knowledge/training of the record. Debates where the candidates have extensive legislative records can only be hurt by their votes.
10:15: Second (third now) time Edwards talked about killing terrorist before they attack us - does that not sit well with anyone else, killing people before they do anything to us?
10:17: "You want me to answer a question about his qualification?" Edwards doesn't really tell us why he's qualified, and Cheney basically told us that Edwards was only doing the job to pander to the south and be president eventually.
Cheney is being Bush's attack dog, while Edwards is only being Kerry's cheerleader.
10:20: Edwards missed the point of the last question, as Gwen was trying to get the VP candidates to talk about themselves outside of their running mates. Edwards merely dropped the kerry and added a "we".
10:25: Edwards hit Bush with flip-flop angle! Why haven't we heard this line of attack before? On the other hand Cheney said earlier tyhat Kerry is consistent on defense - consistently on the wrong side. Interesting tactical switch for both sides.

VP Debate Blog
Im gonna attempt to blog some of my thoughts on the VP debate:
9:28: Cheney: "If he can't stand up to the pressure that howard dean presents, how can he stand up to al qaida" Cheney is doing a marvelous job at keeping the focus on Kerry, not Bush.
"They don't have a plan, they have an echo" another great Cheney zinger. Cheney is merely repeating Bush's talking points from last week, but he is coming off as intellectual, while Edwards is repeating Kerry and sounding like a broken record.
9:32: Don't denigrate the polish pt 2: Don't denigrate Iraq either! I liek how Gwen is actually following up to get more specifics, especially on issue like "Kerry's Global test for military action.
9:35: "Immediately committed to implementing the 9/11 commission suggestions" - Cheney needs to go after Edwards for that - he's suggesting completely revamping the intelligence apparatus of America as a knee jerk reaction.
9:37: Excellent answer by Cheney on the question of sanctions. Gotta love when they drag Khadafi out.
9:39: "There are 60 countries with members of Al Qaida in them, how many are we going to invade?" Well said, lets move to domestic issues! As to Halliburton, negative points for both sides, for Cheney with the "I need more than 30 seconds" and Edwards for his smirk afterwards. I'm gonna check factcheck.com.
9:42: Personal story! Edwards is chanelling Al Gore (which isn't good btw)
9:45: Brutal attack on Edwards' Senate record! Gonna publish and do the second half in a new post.

The Movie that Makes the Brain Die
I haven't seen F911 yet. I want to, I just never have gotten around to it. Well, the right has their own version now. Welcome to Celsius 41.11 (Website here). What is Celsius 41.11 - the temperature at which the brain starts to die, apparently. Woopdie freakin doo!
Shaun of the Dead
Shaun of the Dead was probably the second best movie I've seen all year, closely following Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (which interestingly enough is out on video as of today! Go buy it!) SotD is perfect British comedy matched with legitimate horror cred. I expected it to be a crappy little movie that I would like; but there was nothing bad or low budget looking about it - go see Shaun of the Dead!

Dave Matthews is a poop dumper!
From CBS Chicago:
"Rock star Dave Matthews and his tour bus driver are facing a filthy lawsuit. The Illinois Attorney General's office says they're responsible for dumping up to 800-gallons of raw human waste from a tour bus onto the Kinzie Street Bridge earlier this month. The nasty mess rained down on passengers aboard a sightseeing boat two weeks ago.The lawsuit accuses the band and one of its tour bus drivers, Stefan Wohl, of violating state water pollution and public nuisance laws. Clerks 2: Electric Bugaloo!
Or rather, Passion of the Clerks. That's right, the viewaskewniverse isnt completely done with its story:
"The writer-director of "Dogma," "Chasing Amy" and "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back" told the Associated Press on Friday that he has begun work on a sequel to "Clerks," his homemade indie classic from 1994.
That $27,000 movie, shot at night in a store where Smith worked, chronicled the adventures of Dante and Randal, two guys who talk about life, death, sex and movies while working at neighboring stores.
The sequel picks up 10 years later.
"It's about what happens when that lazy, 20-something malaise lasts into your 30s. Those dudes are kind of still mired, not in that same exact situation, but in a place where it's time to actually grow up and do something more than just sit around and dissect pop culture and talk about sex," Smith said during an interview at his Hollywood office. "It's: What happened to these dudes?" "

Republicans and Naked Boys!
It doesn't get much funnier than this:
"The Statue of Liberty. Bloomingdale's. The Brooklyn Botanical Gardens. A stage full of naked guys singing. Oops! The city's tourist bureau has pulled an off-Broadway show called ``Naked Boys Singing'' from a list of discounted offerings to visiting Republican delegates, after the Republican National Committee complained it wasn't suitable." Dogs Not playing Poker?
A silly article from a silly site:
Scientists Debunk Popular Painting: "Dogs Can't Play Poker."
'After years of comprehensive studies involving thousands of canines, scientists at the renowned Arkansas Canis Familiaris Research Foundation have concluded that dogs cannot play poker. "Despite the proliferation of the popular painting "A Night Of Poker," which depicts several dogs sitting around a table playing poker, it's impossible for dogs to engage in such activities," the foundation stated in a prepared release." full story from www.pokerinathens.com

Dumbest thing of the week
Here's the dumbest line in music I've heard recently (and it's even in a song I like)
"In the wilderness, the only place to find freedom is in the dictionary, under 'f'." - Matthew Good, "Alert Status Red"
What the hell does that mean?

New Top Ten (Minus 5)
I’m back with another exciting “top ten” list and his time I’ll be counting down the ten best pirates in movies over the years (and by years I mean ones I’ve seen). Oh and by ten, I mean five. I decided to do five, because, well, I didn’t want to think of ten. Aside from being a pirate I also happen to be lazy. So here we go:
5. Name: Sloth
Movie: The Goonies
Actor: John Matuszak
Quote: “Hey, you guys!”
List-worthiness: You don’t see a whole lot of pirating from the Goonies’ lovable mutant, but Sloth is a true pirate at heart, complete with a treasure chest and pirate ship in the end!
4. Name: Captain Hook
Movie: Hook
Actor: Dustin Hoffman
Quote: “To a ten-year-old I'm huge.”
List-worthiness: I almost didn’t include Hook because I wanted to add Bob Hoskins’ Smee, but then I remembered he did the Mario Bros. movie and that automatically disqualifies someone from making this list ever. I really like Hook, despite the fact I had to watch it everyday one summer with my cousins. It’s such a neat take on the Peter Pan mythos and Dustin Hoffman fit very well into it.
3. Name: Dread Pirate Roberts aka the Man in Black aka Westley
Movie: The Princess Bride
Actor: Cary Elwes
Quotes: “There's a shortage of perfect breasts in this world. It would be a pity to damage yours.” “Life is pain, Highness. Anyone who says differently is selling something.”
List-worthiness: The Princess Bride may be the perfect movie. I mean, when you think about it, it’s a chick flick, but you can’t help getting caught up in its magic. Cary Elwes is awesome in the lead role, and Mandy Patinkin gets points for be the probable future Dread Pirate Roberts.
2. Name: Captain Jack Sparrow
Movie: Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl
Actor: Johnny Depp
Quotes: “I think we've all arrived at a very special place. Spiritually, ecumenically, grammatically.” “You need to find yourself a girl mate. Or perhaps the reason you practice three hours a day is that you already found one, and are otherwise incapable of wooing said strumpet. You're not a eunuch are you?” “You seem somewhat familiar. Have I threatened you before?”
List-worthiness: I don’t need to explain why Johnny Depp is on this list. What you may want to know is why he didn’t make number one. That’s because the greatest movie pirate in the world is in a movie you probably never saw:
1. Name: Yellowbeard
Movie: Yellowbeard
Actor: Graham Chapman
Quotes: “She couldn't be your mother. No woman ever slept with me and lived.” “Fruit of me loins? I haven't got fruit in me loins! Lice, yes, and proud of 'em, but no fruit!”
List-worthiness: The greatest pirate and the greatest pirate movie of all time. Take the comic genius of Monty Python, specifically the late Graham Chapman (with appearances by Eric Idle and John Cleese), and the zaniness of Cheech and Chong, and that weird priest from the Princess bride and you get the only movie that can successfully make multiple jokes about rape and urinating on imported hedges. Hopefully this gem will make its way onto DVD, because it is a must see for all pirate fans.

Political Compass
Find out where you rank on the political spectrum, just click here. Its a decent 6 page survey, that rates your ideological platform from left to right and from authoritative to libertarian. Check the link out, then come back here and post how you stand. Here's mine:
Economic Left/Right: -4.62
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -4.31
I'm kind of suprised I came off as left of center as i did - the closest political figures to me are nelson mandela and the dalai lama, thats not too bad company, eh?

Cancelled on Penn
Live on Penn has been cancelled for the rest of the season! Here's what the website says:
"It is with much regret that we have to inform you that the remainder of the Live on Penn concert series has been cancelled effective immediately. We had hoped to once again bring the people of D.C. first-rate entertainment at reasonable prices all summer long. Unfortunately, the series is no longer viable. We want to thank our sponsors, partners, volunteers and the live music fans of Washington who truly supported this series. For those who purchased advanced tickets, information on refunds will be forthcoming in the near future."
Not viable? What does that mean? I suspect maybe it has to do with the terror alert, and rising costs of security. (Putting DC on code orange costs over a million dollars a day). Hopefully LoP is not gone forever, as its been a really fun event last summer and what little of this summer we had it. If anyone has more info as to why it was cancelled, let me know, via email or comment.

Dwain's getting old: the weekend!
So I had an action packed weekend, between a good friend's wedding and my 5 year high school reunion. Between both events, I'd say I played flip cup with the most ecletic group EVER. I got to see a lot of neat people I'd lost track of which was great.

BTW major props to the dems on their convention so far. Theyve had some moments to make even rabid anti-political party people think about switching from I to D. I said think, so dont get your hopes up, democrats.

Got to see two good movies this weekend: Anchorman was hilarious - Steve Carrell completely stole the movie. Also, Harry Potter 3 was finally watched by Jesse and myself and I thought it was the best of the Potter movies so far.

A case against Bush
Here's a great commentary from the New Republic:
"What does it mean to call the president "undemocratic"? It does not mean Bush is an aspiring dictator. Despite descending from a former president and telling confidants that God chose him to lead the country, he does not claim divine right of rule. He is not going to cancel the election or rig it with faulty ballots. (Well, almost certainly not.) But democracy can be a matter of degree. Russia and the United States are both democracies, but the United States is more democratic than Russia. The proper indictment of the Bush administration is, therefore, not that he's abandoning American democracy, but that he's weakening it. This administration is, in fact, the least democratic in the modern history of the presidency."
Here's the rest.

Amazing away message!
This was my friend Josh's away message a little while ago, thought I'd share:
"Real Men of Genius. Today I salute you, Mr. Compulsive Away Message Checker. While most people are out living life, you are at home reading about it on your computer. Right-mouse-clicking and Getting Buddy Info, or even using the little Info icon at the bottom of your Buddy List. Sure there are people on your list that you haven't talked to in years, and would probably consider you a stalker for keeping them there, but that doesn't stop you from reading their away messages...EVERY DAY. So click open a fresh new Buddy Info window, Marauder of the Mousepad, and don't wander too far from your computer...because you never know when someone will be back."

That sucked!
I was so hyped for Live on Penn (DC's summer weekly concert series). Needless to say, when I got there, they said I couldn'd bring my bag in! Bastards! The nice security guard suggested I hide it in a bush and come back for it later. That wasn't going to happen, and we decided it wasn't worth going back to drop the bag off and return, so we went mallratting instead, and I got Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett's Good Omens novel. Apparently my thing is attaching amazon links to be cool. I've recently got back into reading fiction, and have breezed through The Davinci Code, Gaiman's amazing American Gods, and I'm currently reading Cain, a sort of modern Frankstein meets the Exorcist.
Ok thats it for now, hopefully I'll have better luck next week with Galactic and Nappy Roots.

1st top ten list!
Without further ado, I bring you my first of many top ten lists. I recently bought Buffy season 6 on DVD. And it got me thinking about my favorite episodes of what I consider one of the greatest shows of all time. So here we go:
Top Ten Episodes of Buffy: The Vampire Slayer:
10. "Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered" (Season 2): Rounds out the bottom of the list, because it is so darn funny watching the girls go gaga over Xander. Just slightly funnier than Season seven's "Him" which features a bewitched Buffy trying to kill Wood with a bazooka.
9. "Earhsot" (Season 3): One of the first great episodes of Buffy that was really dramatic without being overly sappy (IE most of Season 2). Buffy can hear thoughts, and we get the first real character development for little Jonothan.
8. "Becoming, Pt 2" (Season 2): More great drama, as Joyce discovers Buffy's slayerhood, Giles being tortured, and Angel bites the big one (It doesn't last). Also one of the precious post-morten Robia LaMorte moments.
7. "Hush" (Season 4): Can a show whose strength lies in witty dialogue do a silent episode and not have it suck? Hell yes.
6. "Tabula Rasa" (Season 6): Here's an episode that follow the fabulous musical episode of Buffy and still managed to hold its own and muscle its way onto the list. A brief anmesia-filled retreat from the gloominess that proceeded it, which made the return to it even more painful.
5. "Conversations With Dead People" (Season 7): Perfect example for why Buffy was such a good show - it could be spooky, dramatic, and hilarious all at the same time. Dawn's night is downright scary, Willow's creepy as hell, and Buffy's hilarious, but full of some of the pychological insight to Buffy's psyche outside of "Normal Again".
4. "Restless" (Season 4): Such a cool little episode, visually interesting, taking from source's all over the place, most notably "Apocalypse Now". Really capped off Season 4 better than "Primevil" aka "Joss Whedon sees the Matrix".
3. "Chosen" (Season 7): I am sure a lot of reason's I feel strongly about this episode was that it was the last. It's painful to see a show you love go out, but at least it went out on top.
2. "Normal Again" (Season 6): I just watched this episode again last weekend. It is scary how Whedon and Co. manage to tie every part of Buffy's character and environment into a schizophrenic web on confusion. My old roommate was so sold that he claims Buffy is still sitting in an asylum somewhere.
1. "Once More With Feeling" (Season 6): One of the most daring, entertaining, and touching hours ever to grace the small screen. Every time you watch this musical episode, you catch something new, so subtly laid in the episode's subtext. Funny (Anya and Xander's "I'll never tell"), warming and wrenching on the heart (Tara's realization of Willow's deception), and ultimately tragic (Buffy's heavenly realization to the Scoobies). This episode has it all.
I admit I'm a little surprised by some of my choices, when looking at how I feel about the seasons overall, here's my ranking of them from best to worst with the number of episodes from each season that made my list:
1. Season 7 (2)
2. Season 5 (0)
3. Season 3 (1)
4. Season 6 (3)
5. Season 4 (2)
6. Season 2 (2)
7. Season 1 (0)
I think part of the reason is that while Seasons 3 and 5 were really good, they flowed smoothly, without a lot of episodes standing out, while for every "Tabula Rasa" in Season 6, there was also a "Doublemeat Palace", aka, the throw away episodes made the great ones look all that better. Anyways, there's my opinion, feel free to flame me if you disagree. I'll be back soon with another.

I may be the worst blogger ever!
It's true! It's true!
I've been really busy with a lot of stuff recently (I know that is a terrible excuse) but I haven't had time to sit down and blog lately. Hopefully this will get me back into the habit. So what have I been doing? Working, reading, travelling. I spent part of the 4th of July weekend in Hanover, and was also home the weekend before that. Before that, I spent a week in Sandbridge Beach, which is a little south of VA Beach. Had a great time celebrating my grandparents 50th wedding anniversary.
What's coming up for the Dwain? In a few short weeks, another of my friends will be getting hitched, and the very next day I'll have my first high school reunion! Talk about feeling old!
A couple of things I want to do. First, I want to finish the first couple chapters of my story so I can post them online. Secondly, I want to work on some top ten lists (That will happy sooner rather than later, I guarantee), and thirdly, I've decided I want to do a weekly talk radio show, I've been experimenting with the idea of starting an internet radio station, ala www.live365.com . That's all for now!

Holy Cow I'ma Slacker!
I've been busy, but not that busy! no webbling for almost two weeks (or mebbe more, I can't count). Work has been crazy, plus I went out of town for a few days. In the meantime, you should have checked out a couple of things, like Joss Whedon and John Cassaday's Astonishing X-Men #1 - simply great great stuff. Also, I caught sceening of both Saved! and Napoleon Dynamite over the last few days and would highly recommend either film to any fan of slightly offbeat comedies. Both are movies I'll have on DVD when they're released.
I'm gonna start doing top five or top ten lists. I just have to think of some good ones.
Peace out for now.
